Shravana Amavasya comes in Krishna Paksha of Shravana month, the 5th month in Hindu calendar. It is also known by the name of Hariyali Amavasya. Prayers are offered to Goddess and Gods on this day to seek their blessings for good rains and a plentiful harvest following that. Worshipping Lord Shiva on this day is considered highly favorable. Other than this, offering oblation (Pind Daan) to ancestors for their peaceful afterlife is also performing on this day.
Shravana Amavasya Vrat Puja Vidhi
As monsoon starts from the month of Shravana, everything becomes greener and the lands spring to life again. The living also feels cheerful and relieved during this time. Therefore, from environmental point of view, this also increases the significance of Hariyali Amavasya considerably.
The fasting rituals perform on this day are as follows:
- Take a bath in a holy river, pond or lake in the morning. Offer Argh to Sun God, then oblation (Tarpan) to your ancestors.
- Donate and Fast things to the poor for the peaceful afterlife of your forefathers.
- On this day, people worship Peepal tree and circumambulate around it.
- Planting trees like Banyan, Banana, Peepal, Basil, Lemon etc is considered favorable on Shravana Amavasya, because these trees are believed to be inhabited by the Gods.
- Nakshtras like Uttara Phalguni, Shravana, Uttara Ashadha, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Pushya, Rohini, Mrigashira, Revati, Chitra, Mool, Vishakha, Ashwini, Hasta, etc are consider pious and favorable for planting trees.
- Feed flour balls to the fishes in a near river or pond. Also, feed flour or sugar to the ants nearby your home.
- On the day of Sawan Hariyali Amavasya, visit a neary Hanuman temple and recite Hanuman Chalisa. Also, offer vermillion (Sindoor) and Jasmine oil to Lord Hanuman.
Significance of Shravana Amavasya
Shravana Amavasya is quite popular due to its spiritual and environmental importance. To show our gratitude towards trees, this day is called by the name of Hariyali Amavasya. As per spiritual point of view, various sacred activities are performed on this day including Pind Daan for the liberation of a person’s forefathers.
